The photos in the slide show were taken by me after the Tsunami hit Thailand and show the damage it did to our hotel, Gill & I had been in the resort of Phuket less than a day. Our hotel (Patong Beach Hotel) took a direct hit and had to be closed down. Luckily we were out late on our first night and were in our room on the second floor when the wave came on our first morning in the resort. I was a first-aider at the time so made my wife stay in the room while I went down to help. Most of the hotel guests either returned to their own country or were transferred to other resorts on the island that had not been affected, we decided to stay,
against the wishes of our tour operator. I found a hotel (The Ban Sukothai on Bangla Road) that had not been affected and to the amazement and gratitude of the management, booked us in for the rest of the holiday.
It was a very sad time for everyone including us and many people died.
The Thai people are very resilient and the restoration work started immediately, today when you look round you could never guess how badly it affected some of the resorts.
The best way for people to help today is to visit Thailand and frequent the small shops, bars and eateries that are run by everyday Thais, you will find them very freindly and very grateful, it's these people that need our money not the big business men that own the tourist traps !!
