I was the first of 3 kids & I was born at home in Sheffield,
my dad was a collier and my mother worked as a grinder/glazer both
physically hard jobs.
Eleven months later Along came brother Gordon and eight years past before Robert
was born.
Gordon & me went to the same schools, Longley infants and
junior schools then on to Shirecliffe high school. We wagged it quite a lot and
basically drifted through the last 3yrs.
I left school and got a job at Joseph Rodgers the old cutlery
manufacturer. Then worked in a forge, then a brewery, then as a swing grinder,
then back to forging where I stayed for 25yrs (see
the video here) until the yanks bought the company and shut us
down. I then trained as an excavator operator but could not find work so became
a portable appliance tester I did 6months at this until applying and getting my
present position (I wish it had happened years ago)
I got the job of babysitting Robert while Gordon was out &
about and generally up to no good, no way was he going to to cop for that !!
Gord left school 1yr later, we worked in the forge together
for a year until he moved on to another job, Gord decided he didn't like work
so took early retirement in his early 30s much to the dismay of the DHSS !!!
